Abstract

The rapid proliferation of social media has transformed communication patterns among youth, offering unprecedented opportunities for interaction, information sharing, and self-expression. However, these digital platforms have also introduced significant personal security threats. This paper examines the nature, extent, and implications of social media-related security risks facing youths in Kisii County, Kenya. Drawing from existing literature, empirical studies, and contextual analysis, the study identifies key threats including exposure to harmful content, online fraud, identity theft, surveillance, and cyberbullying as the most prevalent social media security threat affecting youths in Kisii County. This study is grounded in Routine Activity Theory (RAT). The paper further explores the socio-cultural and technological factors that heighten youth vulnerability and proposes strategic interventions grounded in digital literacy, policy enforcement, and stakeholder collaboration. The study adopted a qualitative research design that integrated multiple complementary approaches to ensure depth and contextual relevance. It involved a systematic document analysis of scholarly articles, policy reports, and institutional publications to establish a strong theoretical and empirical foundation. In addition, a contextual analysis centered on Kisii County was undertaken to ground the study within its specific socio-cultural and geographical setting.  The findings highlight the urgent need for integrated approaches to safeguard youth in an increasingly digitized environment.
